ATRF provides strategic investment oversight of the plans, with the goal of delivering sustainable plans over the long term, at a cost and risk level acceptable to our sponsors.

ATRF has been providing reliable pensions through world-class investment support for our plans for over 80 years. ATRF takes a carefully informed, strategic view of investments that focuses on long-term rather than just short-term results.

ATRF’s investment strategy is customized to meet the unique needs of our plans. It has been developed by combining an understanding of the expected return of financial assets and their risks, with an understanding of our members’ benefits and the forces acting upon them.

At the core of everything we do is our fiduciary duty to act in the best interests of teachers, the plans, and the pension funds.

ATRF Investment Management

In accordance with legislation passed by the Government of Alberta in 2019, ATRF retains responsibility for setting the strategic direction of all ATRF investments, while the day-to-day management of ATRF assets is conducted by Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo).

ATRF continues to be the trustee for the plans and manages the administration of the pension. The ATRF Board remains in control of determining how the pension fund is invested at a strategic level, as well as retaining ownership of the plans’ assets.

An internal ATRF Investment Strategy and Risk team supports the ATRF Board in setting an investment policy that will provide consistent delivery of plan benefits, maintain affordable contribution rates that are relatively stable over time, and achieve and maintain fully funded plans.

The Investment Strategy and Risk team also perform an important monitoring function; careful monitoring of the investment portfolio and its performance is vital to ensuring that ATRF’s portfolio remains consistent with its investment policy, and that investments are performing as expected.

Prior to the asset management transfer, ATRF had an investment policy that detailed the level of risk acceptable to ATRF, as well as the asset allocation targets. This policy has not changed, though recently, it has been enhanced and refreshed. This is the policy we are referring to that AIMCo must now put into practice.
